Painting Isn’t As Easy As It Looks

Hello, everyone.

I know we love our tree’s on this blog, and we will continue to post articles here teaching more about caring for and improving our homes tree landscape. But recently I took a stab at painting a room in my home, and I just felt like telling you a little story of how painting your home can turn into a real struggle. Yes, I know, it SOUNDS easy, but in reality it’s a lot of work and planning.

Now I know what you’re thinking, why didn’t you just hire someone to paint your rooms for you? Well….easily put I’m picky, and broke. At the time it seemed ideal to just do the job myself. I also wanted to do some custom artwork of mine on the walls. So, in short, here’s a summary of how my experience went and hopefully you can learn from my many mistakes.

This is the step I hated the most. I could have skimmed on products, but I wanted my room fully customized. Also it’s not a good idea to ever get the cheapest materials you can find. I’ve learned that the hard way when I was younger and I ended up having to repaint over everything after the paint started to chip off right away (horrible experience!).

Everyone’s budget is going to look different. I spent around a total of $200 on my room. There wasn’t a lot of space as it’s the smallest room in the house. But you could easily skip on any extra designs or paint if you just want something simple.

The Prepping Phase

First and foremost, you’re never going to know how much junk you have in your room before you try and move it all before you paint. I spent way more time moving things than I had actually anticipated.

Unlike other people I decided to just remove ALL the items in my room to be safe, as I have a huge work desk in my room (had to be taken apart piece by piece). So I’d HIGHLY suggest that if you’re planning on moving stuff you plan for it to take a full day or two.

The Process

Thankfully my walls were just a plain shade of off white. That left almost no extra preparations and made it fairly easy to deal with. As I can only imagine if you’re trying to get a bright hot color repainted onto your walls.

I’d have to say that I’m glad I did my research before going full into this process. The first step is mainly trying to put some tape evenly around the room where you don’t want the paint to get (i.e windows, doors, etc) and also put down plastic sheets on the floor just incase the paint drips.

Basically at this point you’re able to start your painting. There’s not really any secret to painting other than to try and apply it evenly without causing any clumps. If you’re using a roller this should be super easy, just make sure the roller isn’t over saturated with paint to the point that it’s dripping. The last part is just making sure to wait for your paint to dry and then decide if you need more than one coat of paint. Since my room was a based off white, it was basically really easy to cover it with blue paint. However, as I mentioned earlier if you’re covering up brighter colors then you might want to prime your walls with white paint or apply multiple layers.

In Conclusion

My experience wasn’t terrible, and most likely it could have gone horribly wrong. After the paint dried I just simply decorated the room with some of my own murals. I’d say the most important part is making sure that you follow the directions on the products and ask for help when buying supplies. Hopefully my experience has helped you out a bit. If you are in the Austin TX area, and you decide that you would rather go with a professional, I would highly recommend Handyman Austin. When it became time to paint the exterior of my home, I knew it was more than I could handle, I’m so glad I found these guys. They have years of experience with interior and exterior painting, and pretty much all handyman services.

Cheers & best wishes in your painting adventures!

The Benefits of Trimming Your Trees

All trees have the need for pruning, and tree experts are very familiar with this. As incredible as it sounds, if you don’t prune your trees, they will eventually do it themselves by rejecting the branches that need to be trimmed. However, this is not actually the best solution, since when trees do this, a short portion of the branch remains and the bark usually splits, making the trees vulnerable to various types of diseases. This is why it is so important to maintain your properties trees, and for someone who is properly trained in tree trimming to perform the job. If you are not very familiar with the proper techniques, there is always a tree service that can do it very successfully. If you are in the central Texas area, and looking for a reliable tree company, we recommend Tree Trimming Round Rock. Professional tree services are available in all major cities, so if your trees are in need of attention, search for a reputable company in your area.

Types of tree trimming

It is important to know that there are four different degrees of tree trimming, and those are: fine pruning, standard pruning, hazard trimming and crown reduction trimming. The first one is obviously related to the appearance, while the second one is concerned with improving the structure of the tree. On the other side, hazard trimming is done for safety purposes, in cases where branches have reached a certain size and should be trimmed. Crown reduction trimming is done in cases where there is certain damage and the tree needs to recover by removing several major branches. However, there are many other reasons why tree trimming is important, so, let’s see the benefits of trimming your trees.

Improving tree health

Tree trimming is done for the purpose of removing all dead branches, or those which are injured, infected, insect infested, or mechanically damaged. Additionally, tree pruning is also necessary in cases when there are branches that disturb others in their growth, or the ones that collide or interfere with other structures or branches. Of course, it is always better to act preventively, but it is also never too late to remove the infected parts of the plant.

Increasing the quantity of the crop

If you have some fruit trees in your garden, you should know that regular tree pruning will increase the quantity of the crop, especially if done in late winter.

Maintaining the form and the purpose of trees

When talking about the shape of trees, we actually think of the trees appearance and aesthetics. In this case, especially if the trees run along a path, street or avenue. Tree pruning is essential often times trees need to be pruned twice a year. However, when talking about living fences, it is more common to trim the trees less allowing them to almost blent together creating a barrier. Other special forms of pruning are also applied with trees such as bonsai, for example. Controlling the tree dimensions by trimming is the most important in cities where space is most often cramped. Sometimes large trees block the view and essential visions or violate the view of neighbors, buildings, etc. Then, it is necessary to trim regularly or completely remove them when necessary.

By trimming your trees, you don’t just protect the trees, but also people.

It is always necessary to remove dead limbs, and branches of trees that are infected or damaged. Often after several years of growth, a tree trunk reaches the height of street installations; making it a threat to city power lines and structures. In those cases, trimming is very necessary, but be careful to maintain good balance and an overall pleasing appearance of the tree.

Why Trees are Important

Trees have always been into human consumption since time immemorial. It has been used as a source for lumber, timber, paper and other related products. Moreover, there are other trees that are used as an enhancer in aesthetic value of places such as parks, backyards and even your neighborhood. Among all of these things, it could be proven how trees are very much essential in our lives.

However, more to these things, what else are the important usages of trees? Why do we need to preserve them? Why is it important to our lives?

Written below are some of the many uses of trees in our lives. This will not only educate people about how trees are essential, but also, it will be a way to help preserve the lives of trees, especially when people already know why it exists in the world.

1. Clean Air

A lot of studies have proven that trees actually produce a cleaner air. In urban areas, trees and forests are actually saving one life, in average, since the air is ‘filtered’ in a way that particulates in the dirty air are cleaned by trees. A study has proven that deaths in heart diseases and respiratory problems have risen after all of the trees are cut down in their area. This is precisely the reason why trees are considered as the lungs of the world, because it gives and produce oxygen.

2. Jobs

More and more people are actually spending their leisure time at parks and national forests. This means that because there are trees in these recreational places, economies of countries with these kinds of natural resources could be healthy especially that these areas actually generate jobs.

3. Clean and potable water

Forests are proven not only to filter the air we breathe but also provide a natural filter in water. For instance, in New York City, tap water is potable not because it is filtered mechanically by machines but it is mostly because of the surrounding forests it has in its perimeter.

4. Mental Health

Studies have shown that people who are feeling down may feel good especially when taking a walk in the woods. Access to green areas, or areas that are rich in trees and forests could necessarily yield cognitive functioning, self-discipline as well as over-all mental health. One study even proves that trees that could be seen by patients outside hospitals could help in the over-all revival of the patient.

5. Temperature control

The effects of climate change could be felt almost in all parts of the world. Change in temperature, more intense weather condition and stronger presence of storms and hurricanes are only few of the effects that climate change has been manifesting. Planting of trees could necessarily reduce this increase in heat. Moreover, households that are shaded by trees could actually spend 12% on cooling costs especially in the summer, where heat is utmost intense.

6. Flood control

It has always been proven that water can hold a large amount of water that would necessarily stream its way downhill and surge into the rivers and into towns. This is precisely the reason why trees are important especially in the case of a flood prone city or area.

When to Trim a Tree

A lot of us fancy trees planted especially on our backyards or in our neighborhood. This is because not only for the reason that trees are actually a good source of oxygen thus fresh air, but also because the aesthetic value that the tree provide in a particular place where it is situated is incomparable. However, just like any other things, trees need to be attended to and taken care of because it might cause some hassle especially when there are dead branches of leaves on the roads or some pile of dead leaves especially during autumn.

This is precisely the reason why every now and then, trees should be trimmed and pruned. However, when really is a tree needed to be pruned? Is there a specific time of the year that you could prune and trim them rather than just whenever you like?

Written below are some of the tips on when to prune and trim a tree.

When to Prune

The question of the perfect time a tree should be pruned is also dependent to the reason why you prune it. For instance, light pruning or the removal of dead wood could obviously be done whenever you want. However, being able to know that individual species may actually have different set of needs that is crucial to be remembered.

One of the most common time of the year where trees are trimmed and pruned is during the winter. The result of trimming and pruning during this season will be very promising, especially that the tree will have to experience new growth in the following season, that is spring. Thus, as a tree owner, you have to maximize this time especially when you have a desired effect that you would want to achieve to the tree. Usually, it is best to wait until the lowest temperature of the winter has passed where the tree should be pruned and trimmed in order to attain best results.

To be able to ‘manipulate’ the growth of tree branches by slowing it down, especially those that you don’t want, or in other words, to slow down the ‘dwarf’ development of a tree or a branch, pruning and trimming should be done instantaneously after the growth season has been completed. The slowing effect is for the reduction of the total leaf surface that would also reduce the amount of food that is going to be produced and send towards the root. Moreover, summer pruning and trimming is done in order to ‘correct’ a tree. For instance, limbs that are defective can be seen more easily during this time or those that hang down too far below the weight of its leaves.

When not to Prune

Of course, there is a certain time in the year that you should never prune or trim a particular tree, and that season is fall. In fall, decay fungi spread its spores abundantly during this season and the ‘healing’ of ‘wounds’ when you prune and trim your tree will be relatively slower in fall. This is the time when you have to keep your pruning tools inside your storage.

You could do tree trimming yourself, or you can call any Austin tree service professional, who are more efficient in doing it because it could save you time, as well as produce a more efficient job in the long run.

What Trees Should You Consider

Trees have different assets that go well with some landscapes. And others have requirements in order for them to survive on your yard. Many best live in moist, woodsy and rich soils on the acidic side and others like alkaline soil which is dry because it does not have matters that hold moisture.

But some trees are needed to be considered because of their liabilities like thorns which is not safe for families with children, others are weedy and it does not look good in the front yard. Also, some are messy which spread twigs and all that all over the place. This is why you need to search for trees that will really suit your liking.

A lot of people thinks that if the tree is small, it is still young but it is not always like that, some might be small because it does not have enough nutrients to support its growth and some are also made to be small and cute.

Trees also live according to the weather on the country you are living in. Tropical trees can never survive in cold weather and this is why you need to make sure that it really fits your home. Trees that are planted in the city are more likely to live shorter life spans as compared to the trees that planted in the countryside. There are also trees that can still live despite extreme weather conditions.
